Welcome to my origami site, now in a new location and in a new format. All data and pictures from the old web site have not been transfered yet, but the newest material is here and I hope that you will find something interesing nonetheless. Enjoy!

This bucky ball is the largest origami project I did so far (not including the 1000 cranes). This is a ball from pentagons pointing in family of bucky balls and consists of 270 modules. It is done in proper 3-coloring which means that no two modules of same colour are next to each other.
My first attempt at this bucky ball ended in frustration: I was a bit arrogant and thought that proper 3-colouring won't be a problem. But it proved to be a big one and not doable without a good mathematically based strategy. My warmest thanks to Mr. Hull who sent me the paper on bucky balls and proper 3-colouring that provided a comprehensive insight into this problem. While I was waiting for an answer to this problem, the nearly finished ball collapsed due to light weight paper that was unable to hold the shape. That's why it ended up in trash can and I made an entirely new one. Hence: if you are planning to make this model, use a harder paper, for example coloured printing paper.
Assembling this bucky using proper 3-colouring requires concentration and patience but don't be discouraged. The result is surely worth it!

Hello,
this is very nice!

Just a some questions.

Is the model stable?

Did you esperience some problems due to the considerable number of units (270)?

Hello, thanks for commenting.

Yes, the model is actually quite stable and the units do hold very nicely.
I recommend using a paper that has some strength, like copy paper, because as time passes (it will be OK for some time, don't worry) the model will become slightly eggshaped because of the weight of the units on top. This is probably inevitable, but much more rapid if the units are made from very soft paper. I used to rotate thi ball every time I did dusting and it lasted for couple of years without losing its shape.
